Background information
Contexts
Ten years after becoming the world’s youngest nation, war-torn South Sudan has been mired in instability and faced with a deteriorating humanitarian crisis.
South Sudan is highly vulnerable to climate change, including flooding, droughts and, most recently, a locust infestation. That combined with protracted violence and armed conflict have resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis with mass displacements.
Flooding and droughts have significantly disrupt livelihood patterns and food-security and have resulted in temporary displacement or longer-term migration. Such shocks exacerbate vulnerabilities and weaken the resilience and adaptive capacity of agriculture dependent communities; they can heighten competition over natural resources, sometimes leading to cattle raiding and communal conflict.
Female-headed households are especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change, as most depend on agriculture to sustain their families, and rely on natural resources like firewood and water.
In terms of current vulnerabilities, majority (59%) reported flood as their highest risk followed by famine (24%), drought (11%), conflict (3%) and least is GBV (2%). In terms of risk occurrence, respondents mentioned reported flood at 37%, diseases at 21% and GBV at 17% as the top three.
HPP Goal
Funded by the Irish Aid, HPP’s goal is to protect and empower women, men, girls and boys living in vulnerable communities in conflict-affected areas. This is so that their lives are saved, their dignity is maintained, and their resilience to ongoing and future natural and man-made shocks and stresses, is increased
Intended Impact
Vulnerable, conflict-affected women, men, girls and boys in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, South Sudan, lead more secure, dignified lives and have increased resilience to ongoing and future shocks and stresses
Impact so far
5,305 HHs have continuous access to safe drinking water from the 2 new boreholes and 18 rehabilitated boreholes, serving approximately 31,830.
To aid the rehabilitation and maintenance of the boreholes, 20 handpump mechanics (5% female) belonging to the county handpump mechanics association were trained
11,675 individuals have been reached through awareness raising on both safe hygiene and sanitation practices and COVID-19. 20 hygiene promoters (55% female) were recruited and trained on awareness raising for hygiene promotion.
